Electromagnetic Actuating Coil

Electromagnetic actuating coil assemblies are utilized in locking differential systems, allowing the vehicle operator to engage or disengage the differential locking mechanism on demand. Prior to this development locking differentials were of the mechanical type where some amount of slippage was required in order for the locking mechanism to engage.

The locking differential coil is basically a large solenoid which engages the locking mechanism by either actual movement of the coil or through movement of an engagement ring. With either type design, engagement of the locking device is through engagement of a dog clutch mechanism.
